Losing the little Fire TV Stick remote is easy — it slips into couch cushions and vanishes. The good news is that your Fire TV Stick, 4K Max, or Fire TV Cube stays reachable on your home Wi-Fi even when the physical remote is gone. Remote for Fire TV connects over that same network and rebuilds the whole control surface on your phone: the D-Pad, OK, Home, Back, Menu, playback, and volume. The first time you connect, your Fire TV shows a four-digit code on the TV screen — you read it off the screen and type it into the app, so you can pair the app without ever touching the missing remote. After that first pairing the app remembers your TV and reconnects on its own.

Step by step

How to fix it: Lost Firestick Remote.

Each step takes seconds. No account needed — most take nothing more than your phone and the code shown on the TV.

  1. Join the same Wi-Fi

    Connect your phone to the exact Wi-Fi network your Fire TV already uses. Control runs over your local network, so both devices must share one router.

  2. Open Remote for Fire TV and scan

    Launch the app. It scans the network and lists every Fire TV it finds — usually your Living Room Fire TV appears within a couple of seconds.

  3. Read the code off the TV

    Tap your device. Your Fire TV displays a four-digit code on the screen; type it into the app once. Because the code is shown on the TV, you never need the lost remote to complete pairing.

  4. Control with the full D-Pad

    The on-screen D-Pad, OK, Home, Back, Menu, playback, volume, and mute go live. Everything the lost hardware remote did, your phone now does.

Can I set up Remote for Fire TV if I have completely lost the Firestick remote?
Yes. The pairing code appears on the TV screen, not on the remote, so a lost remote does not block you. As long as your Fire TV is powered on and joined to Wi-Fi, the app discovers it, shows you where to read the code, and takes over every key.
Do I need the original remote to pair the app the first time?
No. You only need to see the TV screen to read the four-digit code the Fire TV displays. You type that code into the app once, and the physical remote is never part of the process.
I lost the remote AND the Firestick is not connected to Wi-Fi — is it hopeless?
Not hopeless — this is the classic bootstrap problem, and there are three real ways out. First, the hotspot bridge: set a phone’s hotspot to the exact same network name and password your Fire TV used before; the Stick rejoins it automatically, and a second phone on that hotspot can run Remote for Fire TV and finish the setup. Second, HDMI-CEC: most TVs can steer the Fire TV with the TV’s own remote — the arrow and OK buttons navigate Fire TV menus on many sets out of the box, enough to reach Settings and join the new Wi-Fi. Third, wired: the Fire TV Cube has a built-in Ethernet connector and Amazon sells an Ethernet adapter for Sticks — plugging in skips Wi-Fi entirely. Once the device is on any network your phone can join, the app takes over as the day-to-day remote.
Can Alexa make my lost Fire TV remote beep?
Only if the missing remote is the Alexa Voice Remote Pro — the backlit model with the light sensor. Ask an Alexa device or the Alexa app to find your remote and the Pro chimes, over a range of roughly 30 feet, and only while the Fire TV itself is powered on. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation Alexa Voice Remotes, and the remotes bundled with Fire TV built-in televisions, have no speaker inside, so nothing will sound no matter what you ask. Remote for Fire TV cannot ping a missing handset either — it takes over the buttons so the couch search can wait until daylight.
My Fire TV went to sleep while the remote was missing — can the app still wake it?
Only if the device is still answering on your Wi-Fi. An idle Fire TV Stick normally stays on the network, so the app finds it and the first button press brings the screen back. A Fire TV that has been unplugged, or one that has dropped off Wi-Fi entirely, is out of reach: there is no infrared in this app and no way in from outside your home network. Power-cycle the device at the wall in that case — it rejoins your Wi-Fi as it boots, and you can then pair with the four digits it shows on screen.
